Southern Skillet Fried Pork Chops

with 3 comments

I made pork chops with gravy the other night for Brian. Ah, very southern, very “soul.” Ah, very un-Christy-like and way to messy and elaborate sounding.  But, I knew it sounded like something he would like.  He claims it is the best meal that I have ever made and the best gravy he has ever tasted.  Brian…is there something that you want, honey?  Maybe he was just buttering me up.  But, maybe it really was delicious. I think it was the latter because I loved it, too!

Here’s the recipe: Fried pork chops retain their tenderness and moisture when they are not cooked to death.  Cook 1/2 inch chops 5 minutes on each side; 3/4 inch chops only 8 minutes; 1-inch chops 10 minutes on each side. Anything thicker should be lightly browned and then braised in liquid.  All are especially nice served with a snowdrift of mashed potatoes.

4 – 6 pork chops, cut 1/2 – 3/4 inch thick
2 tablespoons flour
Salt
Pepper
Olive Oil
1/2 cup of chicken broth

Put several tablespoons of flour on a plate. Salt & Pepper the flour.  Lightly dust the chops with flour, shaking off excess. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Heat the oil (or shortening) in the skillet and Brown the chops over medium heat for 10 -2 12 minutes, as directed above.  Remove the chops from the pan. Pour off all but two tablespoons of grease.  Splash with broth and stir in bits of remaining flour until desired consistency is achieved.

*Apple Cider can be substituted for the broth]

Fannie Farmer 100Th Anniversary The recipe was adapted from my all time favorite recipe book: Fanny Farmer Cookbook, by Marion Cunningham.  This book, very specific and accurate, was originally written for the Boston Cooking School.  It is GREAT for someone like me who isn’t a highly skilled cook.  It’s excellent for beginners and experts, too.

Roll on Dixie, Roll On

with 3 comments

Turn Back Thursday.  Yes like, retro, you know.   I am using my old lap top.  And, feeling groovy.  While cleaning out the files, I found this is an old article. It is the article that was published in the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters Newsletter.  Publishing in Print is different than digital, so the work is lengthy, grammatically correct, etc.  I wish that I still had the pictures of Dixie.  Anyway, if you are one of the people that a pet owns then read on (the article is also posted on Pet My Pet)…

Roll on, Dixie. Roll, on.
By CGH, Southern Pet Sitters

Pat Coleson called to schedule pet sitting as typical when she and her husband vacation. “Sure,” I responded. Her three dogs are very social and always a pleasure. “This time Christy it is going to be different,” she said. Okay. No problem, I thought. “Dixie is paralyzed,” she continued. Paralyzed? Oh, no.

I scoured my pet sitting manuals and researched on the internet the proper handling of animals in this condition. I called a vet. I asked questions. My pet first aid certification is reliable, right? I was prepared when I arrived. Ready to take care of the Coleson crew. File in my left hand full of techniques, tips and safety guidelines for easy reference. My right hand bore my American Red Cross Pet First Aid Manuel. Pet-Nurse Christy ready for work. I entered the home.

No textbook or reading could have prepared me for the feeling that panged my body when I saw this immobile cocker sitting quietly on the floor. She used to run about and bark in true spaniel spirit I remembered. Dixie. Oh, Dixie. Now quiet and afraid, timid she sat unable to move. Tears came to my eyes. Yes, Jan I am serious. They literally rolled down my face. My heart beat fast. I was sad. Poor Dixie. Poor girl. She used to be so happy and so vocal, always talking and dancing around my legs. Jumping up and asking for treats. I pulled her legs behind her like a baby doll. She could not feel them. I changed her diapers. My cheeks wet with tears. She did not flinch. I, feeling silly, wiped my tears. She is just a dog, right?

I fixed her supper, picked her up and placed her at her dish. “What can I do,” I kept thinking, glad that the Colesons opted-out of euthanasia but deeply disturbed by the quality of life she is now destined. Still. Very still she sits. Wanting to scamper and move but can’t. I lifted her to her cot. The other two dogs are moving independently about the room. One jump off the bed led Miss Dixie to never walk again. One jump. Checking off her report card, I locked the house and left. My mind churning. Obsessing, in fact. What can I do? I thought. And, I thought.

A cart! I must convince handy Brian to make one. Or, come up with enough money to buy one. These works surely cost several hundred dollars. Oh, no what can I do? Through researching the internet I found several companies that construct wheelchairs for dogs to encourage mobility of pets with paralyzed rear legs. I contacted each one with my plight. Please, please help, I requested. Dixie must resume her normal habits like eating, exercise and body elimination. If she is going to live, she is going to have to live somewhat normally. And the Colesons, surely they can not live this way for very long.

An email came from Laurie from a small family owned business called Dogs to Go. Their carts were priced reasonably she said. Sympathetic to my plea they would absorb half the cost if I would pay half. Done Deal. With Dixie’s measurement and commitment to financially make this work, Dixie will have a cart. I don’t care how much it is I am going to do this. It turns out the cost was more than reasonable. She will be able to get the support and security she needs to move freely and without pain. Knowing the Colesons had hard decisions to make and knowing this time must be emotionally trying, I could not wait to tell the Colesons of my donation, of my idea, of my solution to this horrific problem. No one likes to see their pet struggle to execute movement once performed with ease.

She zooms everywhere,” Pat said when I followed up. When I tell the girls to go out she “rolls out with them.” Sometimes she gets so excited she flies off the steps, she said. Dukes of Hazard style? “Exactly,” she chuckled. Yay. I couldn’t be happier.

Thank you soooo much,” she said. After her accident and stint of immobility Miss Dixie can now shake, rattle and roll.

They’re only animals, right? Yes, just animals. The same ones that bring us laughter and smiles day in and day out. The same ones that shine a little bit of god on us every day. With the benefits of medical advances we can now help them when they need us. We can cherish them as they have cherished us and use our resources to help them live longer happier healthier lives. With the Colesons kind consent and dedication to let Dixie live, and Dogs to Go’s gracious donation Roll on, Dixie. Roll, on. Glad I could help.

Since I am turning it back - here’s a picture. This was our very first Southern Pet Sitters Team. Brian and I weren’t even married yet!  Barry was my Beau!

Olive Lives

with one comment

A couple of you emailed me personally in reference to the beagle at the Statesboro Animal Shelter.  I finally have an update for you.  Olive is alive.

Hi Christy,  Olive has been pulled from the shelter now!!    HOORAY!! – Holly
So, what does this mean?  This means that the Rescue Division of the Humane Society of Statesboro/Bulloch County has found a foster home for her.  With love, care, attention, and medical assistance they will do everything possible to bring her good health, to give her the opportunity she hasn’t had.  Upon a good bill of social and physical health, Olive (with her foster parents) will go to Anderson’s General Store, the Statesboro Mall, and Wal-mart Adoption Saturdays.  Her dream for a permenant family will also land her photo on www.petfinder.com.  The group charges a small adoption fee to try to re-coup some of the expenses of the animal’s care.
Rescuing an animal is no small task. Rather, it is a large task that requires time, love, energy, effort, trips to adoptions, and much more.
If you are interested in Olive or know someone who is then please contact the Statesboro/Bulloch County Humane Society for an interview.
She’s a sweet girl as I bet she will say “thank you so much, Olive-YOU!

Sadie Please Come Home

with 2 comments

Sadie. Oh, Sadie please come home!

Cassie, Louie, Emma and Smokey miss you.

One of my former (and I must mention, favorite) clients has a missing pet. Jodi is a great pet mama who desperately wants to find Sadie.  Following is her note. Please contact her with any information:
Hello everyone:  I have a personal request to make of folks and am trying to reach as wide a network of people as possible.  On 1/22, our dog Sadie, was let out of the yard.  She has been missing since.  While the whole family misses her, Zach (my step-son) is devastated and we haven’t given up on finding her yet.  She was last reported seen in the parking lot of East Georgia Regional – a neighbor f ours saw a “hospital employee” petting her.  I am attaching a photo of Sadie, she is a hound mix, mostly brownish/gray with tan markings. She is very sweet, and was wearing a metal chain collar.  She is about 40 pounds and has been spayed.  If you see her, please let me know. Also, the more folks you could share this with the better!  Sorry to send this out to everyone, but I need to do everything I can to find her.  Call  871-7874 with any information   — Jodi

Blooming Camellias

with one comment

Our Camellias are blooming. According to my mom and Aunt Peg, they should be blooming as they are conspicuous “winter flowers” that originally came from Asia. It is nice to look out the window so see the shrub polka-dotted with pink petals and yellow stamens, especially while the remainder of the yard is drab in response to January.

Considering our house is over a 100 years old, the Camellia Bushes are very established with big  branches and deep roots. One is almost a tree!

I am so glad they are here.

Upon snipping, I brought a few in to brighten our table last night. I know it is a little ridiculous, a bit over-the-top, and rather “Martha” but it’s 0h-so colorful!  I love it! And, so does Beatrice. She laughed and giggled when I brought in the flowers.

Free Credit Report Dot Com Dream Girl Commercial

    with 61 comments

Have you seen the Free Credit Report Dot Com Dream Girl commercials?  Well, I married my dream girl. Well, I married my dream girl. Brian and I laugh uncontrollably EVERY time we see this one. And, the jingle gets caught in my head.  The replaying of the lyric in my head is annoying.  Yet, it is a cute commercial.

Eric Violette sings in entire series of commercials.

Here are the lyrics to the Dream Girl Commercial:

well i married my dream girl,
    i married my dream girl
but she didn’t tell me her credit was bad
so now instead of living in a pleasant suburb
we’re living in the basement at her
    mom and dad’s
no we can’t get a loan for a respectible
home just because my girl defaulted
    on some old credit card
if we’d gone to free credit report dot com
i’d be a happy bachelor with a dog and a yard

Do songs get stuck in your head, too? Like does the melody play over and over again uncontrollably?

I guess this is what advertising is all about, why it is scary and why it works.  It’s also a good reason to get less TV time.

    Cooking Tip

    with 3 comments

As a stay at home mom, I am always looking for culinary tips and tips to save money, too.  I found both at Kitty Tiger’s Kitchen.  I haven’t tried it yet. But, I am going to store it in my memory to try to remember the next time I have a recipe including milk.

Here the interesting cooking tip from Kitty Tiger’s Kitchen:

    Cooking Tips
Dry Powdered Milk is great to cook with. It’s cheaper than regular milk. She recommends the Wal-Mart’s Great Value Brand for the price and taste!

I guess if you use dried milk you don’t have to worry about the hormones in cow’s milk or the estrogen in soy milk. But, then you don’t get the calcium either.  Hmm…I think I am working myself into another post. So, I will leave it at that — a good, money saving, time saving tip.

Maybe I should just get a box to have on hand — those days when I am low on milk. It would save a trip to the grocery, which technically would be saving gas money. Oh, this tip is working it’s way to being green.  Go little tip, go!

    Salad: The Diet Devil

I have been trying to eat more salads. I really like salads and since I am tring to regulate my calories I am trying to eat more of them. But wait a minute. I don’t know if I should be eating more salads! I think I am patting myself on the back for something that is a dietary devil. While lettuce and raw vegtables don’t contain calories, by the time I have my salad fixed it has the fat and calorie equivalent of a hot fudge sundae. Yikes!

Apparently, I should be going more lightly on ranch. Oh, dear ranch, thou are the highest and most mighty dressing. How I love you! But, a quarter cup ladle adds 292 calories and 30 grams of fat. And, the cheese. My favorite topping. The Big Cheese. And, although colorful cheddar cheese may look like an angel it has 110 calories and 9 grams of fat per quarter cup serving! I usually top my salad with a tiara of toasty croutons, oh you innocent looking little bread pieces. Amazingly, croutons can add more than 200 calories and 7.3 grams of fat to your bowl. And, then there’s one of my favorite little salad adornments: potato and macaroni salads. Both, are between 250 – 400 whopping calories with 12 – 26 fat grams.

I guess, I should still have salads but use Italian dressing, carrots, sunflower seeds, and saltine crackers. It will hard to pass up the ranch, cheese, croutons and potato salads. But, a girls got to do what a girls got to do.

Help someone else be salad bar savvy and forward this post. They will probably react like me, with amazement. Little did I know, what I thought was good is really bad. I could have had a sundae instead!

All that I know is that I am going to “feed my nerd” tomorrow.  Excuse me, I am not a nerd. I am a geek. Geeks are smart people with an obesseisive interest nerds are the same but without the social grace. I have a little social grace…I think.  Anyway, back to topic.  Isn’t this exciting! Grandmother’s Rocking Chair

    with 2 comments

College Cottage scored a new piece!

My Grandmother gave me this chair. I just love it.  It came from the Tygart House in (Nashville, Ga), which means that my Greats and Great-Greats used it to rock there babies with this tool.

It is a family heirloom.  Promised before God and family members to love it and care for it and never sell or give it away, my vow was made.

Without the spindles of a typical rocking chair and with the heavy, dark wood it seems substantial, sturdy, and timeless.  When you sit on it to rock you can feel the years of love and motherhood, and the many sleepless nights when the chair creeks while it sways back and while it sways forward.  Thoughts of years past and years forward can not help but drift through your mind, dancing, lingering and weighing like a fog.  I think of the mothers before me and have visions of Beatrice someday rocking her children and her grandchildren. Wow. How profound.

I am not fond of  the re-upholstery job that someone had done to it. So, I am looking for fabric to have it “re-done.”  I am not good with this sort of thing.  Have any suggestions?

chairb4frnt.jpgOr should I paint it?  I really like how the shelves and the red & white chair are spunky and modern, yet I don’t want to damage the rocking chair. Oh, oh. Decisions. Decisions. What should I do?

    painting1.jpg

I do not know much about rockers, either. Beyond knowing that it is an antique, I do not know if this is a Boston, a Salem, etc. Nor, do I have any idea how old it is.  Do you?  The seat has springs in it, which seems unusual.  I do not know if that is original or if someone opted to make it really comfy.

The chair is my good find for the month, well the year for that matter.  It makes me smile to look at it and glow to rock in it.

Yay, little rocking chair. You have found a new home.  We are going to love you!

    Blogging Fog

    with 2 comments

    blogging fog

    blogging fog

The Rambling Housewifehas heard that you can get hooked on blogging. WHAT? No freaking way! Like crack?  Oh, yeah baby.  And, I mean Mama Crank.

Checking your stats can become habit forming. While you can become enslaved to the posts of your favorite blogs — checking religiously for updates. Hmm…what IS the financial tip from The Simple Dollar  today?  And, How IS The Christiansons Life?  Inquiring minds must know, know, know. Oh, yes. I forgot I am writing this post. Ut-hum. Pardon me. There goes my bloggy mind again!

I am just kidding. Blog cravings are really not that bad.  On second thought:  Are they? I guess it depends on your sweet tooth. Do you need something Sorta Crunchy or a caramel coated look at geeky girls’ guide to the first year of motherhood? Or, maybe it’s a haunting look-see at Seth Godins blog that has you in a fix.

Since I only recently joined the blogosphere, I am surprised by what a popular part of my day blogging is.  I love it! I can’t believe that I want to go to the Savannah Blogging Conference.  Or, that I would like to see Daisy’s contribution to Artful Blogging (a real, printed magazine about blogging). But, I do. I really like blogging.  It’s my favorite new hobby.  It’s my escape from the laundry loads that await, the mundane excitement levels of my day, the noisy-ness of a house with a child and two dogs. It is a way for me to share pictures of Beatrice and Barry with my sister, my Aunt’s, my Uncles, my husband’s family, my mom and Brian’s mom. It’s my time for me, just me and only me, me, me! It is the only “me” thing in my day, most days.

Admittedly, blogging is fetching, haunting and down-right addictive. But, when you feel the monkey on your back like when blogging takes up too much of your time, or distracts you from the things in your life that are important it’s time to back off, to obstain from the daily shot. Get your kicks with you family, away from the computer. Get simple, like Boys Rule My Life.

I edit the time stamps some times so that the posts fall out over a period of days. It keeps me in the daily sphere – but more on my time.  That is just a tip from mwa.

Put daily walks in your bag to smoke.  And, get off the darn computer.  Get a life for goodness sakes, a breath of fresh air.  Get hooked on peace, love, and the people that you adore.

…and then go get your blog fix.

McCain Blogette adds to Republican Campaign

    with 2 comments

If you know me, then you know: I like politics.  I really appreciate campaigns, candidate branding, party allegiance, spin, debates, and well, most of things that make up an entertaining political circus.  It fascinates me. It always has. Even as a middle-schooler I participated in mock U.N.’s, Youth Assemblies, and debates and presided over G.U.N.A (Georgia United Nations Assembly).

I am independent, which means that I swing both ways ie. I select my party by the issues and candidate stance as it compares to my current status, lifestyle, and whims.  My party affiliation has changed in the last 12 years.

Anyway, anyway, anyway…the point of this post is to tell you a cool little fact I found out tonight (on Access Hollywood, I am embarrassed to say).  Meghan McCain is blogging from her Dad’s campaign. How cool is that! In McCain Blogette she threads campaign commentary with herself as the needle sewing through the trail. It is SO awesome.

Seriously.  I mean, right next to pictures of her Dad giving a speech there is a picture of her with the spike of her heel broken off.  She is so “real” and touchable.

In my opinion, her blog adds a youthful face to the old hands of the McCain Campaign

While critics argue that make-up preferences and down-loadable play lists have little place with political narrative, that is just exactly what a blog is.  It’s personal. It reflects the writer. This one reflects the patchwork of Meghan’s perspective, the colorful, sometimes-miss-matched-but-ever-honest quilted triangles of her view.

The fact that Meghan has worked at Saturday Night Live AND Newsweek supports the theory that this girl has an open mind, is smart, spunky and has a sense of humor.

Here’s my shout out to you Meghan: You Go Girl. I like your fresh-y blogettes: the Scorpio, the Aries, and the Sagitarious. More, I think they really add a crisp, modernistic, somewhat radical twist on this year’s Republican ticket.

Here’s her latest Youtube clip, which chronicles the South Carolina win from Charleston.

So, if you are a blogger, or if you aren’t a blogger, what do YOU think?

B & Lilly go to Free Spririt

    with 5 comments

Lilly came to visit last week while Amanda and Jon went to D.C. for the weekend. Actually, they went toJon’s sister Jessica’s wedding.  Four WHOLE days away from home. Lucky sister, right?

Mom and I took the girls to Free Spirit Pottery one afternoon.  If you are looking for something fun and free to do in the ‘boro with small children Free Spirit  is a great idea. They give babies a complimentary plaque.  It is totally 100% free.  You can opt for a hand print or a foot print.  We were hoping for a hand print; however the girls had something else in mind.  After trying the hands a few times we finally surrendered.  We used their feet.  Apparently, after a certain age babies like to curl their fingers.

You may think this would be a short trip.  Rather, it took us between 1 -2 hours to pick out the paint colors, try the hands SEVERAL times, get the girls painted and then washed, etc.  It was a fun afternoon!

Would You Like Some Paint on Your Face?

Lilly Gets Her Hand Painted.  Take 1.

Aunt Joni’s Dried Beef & Green Onion Cheese Ball Recipe

    with 3 comments

    20061005 047

    by DiscoWeasel on flickr

When I made the cheese ball for Rod & Lauren’s  football get-to-gether today I thought about Jessica.  Oh, my goodness!  I am such a bad in-law.  Poor Jessica has been asking me for my cheese ball recipe forever.

I think she thinks that it’s an old secret family recipe or something because I have been so slack (like over six months) to get it to her. On her last message she pleaded, “I promise to always give you credit for it, if you will just give it to me.”

We served it at Denny and Megan’s wedding shower. Jessica has wanted the recipe since then! Regretful of the delay, here is the recipe (and no, you don’t need to give me credit for it Jess -It’s all yours, now):

Aunt Joni’s Dried Beef & Green Onion Cheese Ball Recipe

2 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese softened
1/2 cup finely chopped Armour dried beef
1/2 cup chopped green onions, (top and bottom)
    1 tbsp. Accent seasoning

Mix together and put in suran wrap. Shape the cheese in the suran wrap into large ball.

*Option: Roll in finely chopped pecans.

    Refrigerate 1 hour before serving.
Serve with any type cracker. I like Original Wheat Thins or Trisciuts

*If there is any left over you can stuff Hamburgers for the grill.

I am looking for some more cheese ball recipes…good ones! So, if you have them, share them!

    B and the Bracelet

    with one comment

Screeching in the driveway 15 minutes late, Beatrice and I abruptly and barely put-together arrived at our morning date to “bead.”  As newbies to the craft we had to make a last minute run to Wal-mart in the rain to purchase beads at 9:00 a.

Even I, the not-s0-crafty mother, have to admit it was fun. My finery was less spectacular than the other three beaders, but it was fun to make. Their pieces look really, really good.  But, mine is just right for me.  I like it!

As I attempted to take a photo of my work, a saga unfolded.  Watch and see:

    She hasn’t noticed.

    She sees it.

    She’s coming.

    I want to see that.

hmm…very interesting.  I really like this Mommy.

I want it Mommy. No. Huh-huh. Bracelets are not for babies.

    Why not!

     Waaaah.

    Barry wants a look-see.

    Nice jewels.

It’s nice and all, but I really just want my back scratched.

I take off the new jewels and the family is happy.
THEY ALL jump in my lap with excitement!

    Happy Friday, Ya’ll!

    Bucket List Matinee

    with one comment

Brian and I squeezed in a mini-date on Sunday. We scored enough time to go to the movies.  Yahoo!

Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson in The Bucket List

It was fun to get away to The Bucket List matinee.  I love Jack Nicholson .  And Morgan Freeman. I fell in love with Morgan’s work back in Shawshank Redemption .  He has been on the top of my fave list since.  So, it was a no-brainer when we decided which movie to go see.  Despite being a little predictable and corny, the film’s “heart” can not be overlooked.

The movie’s comedy is prevalent enough to present a light-hearted take on an often sobering theme:  immortality.  It is hilarious at times and touching at others.

I swear that Brian teared-up during the movie, although he suggests otherwise. I did not cry, yet I saw others who were. I must admit, I am not a “cryer” as it takes fine acting, reality, and drama to push tears through my ducts.

We both left the movie pondering our own mortality and considering our personal bucket lists.  I suppose everyone has a “bucket list” per se.  Hmm…do you have one?  What is it that you just don’t want to leave here without doing?  I desperately want to go to Africa, on a Safari. I want to go to South America, too.  The short list is: I want to do more international traveling. How about you?

    Here’s a quick off-the-cusp list for me:

    1.  Experience an African Safari

    2. See the Great Wall of China

    3. Give Birth to Another Child

    4.  Float on the Amazon River

But, wouldn’t all this be really expensive?  Yes, I think so.  How much would it cost to do the real ”Bucket List” from the movie? Not counting the cost of a tattoo, it’s about $105,730 for two. Yikes! Maybe I better include: get a better paying job, win the lottery, or cash in on the HGTV Dream Home.

What is on your bucket list? Leave me a comment so that I can dream. Maybe I will add your list to mine!

    Organic Danish

    without comments

Interesting fact found in the Stoneyfield Farm Moosletter:

According to the Danish daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende, about one of every ten purchases in Copenhagen is organic, which makes Denmarks largest city the organic food capital among the worlds capital cities. Copenhagen’s organic food purveyors include gourmet restaurants, cafes, delicatessens, and supermarkets. And 45 percent of the food served in city-run facilities is organic. Copenhagen politicians say they’d like to see only organic food served in most of the city’s old-age homes and homes for children, by the year 2015.

    Copenhagen
    Copenhagen, Denmark
It’s interesting that the politician’s opinion is mentioned.  I know they have big-goverment and big taxes. Despite the latter, the country is noted as one of the happiest in the world.  I saw it on 20/20 or Sixty Minutes the other night.
Hmm…maybe Brian, Beatrice and I should move to Denmark as we could eat more organic food and be happier!
What do you think?  Do you wish more restaurants offered organic foods?  Or, even local foods?  Or, does it even matter?  Would it make a difference in what you order or where you dine?  I am just curious.

B has another new cousin: Baby Jack! Of all of her cousins born this year (three), he is the ONLY boy.  So, you know the family is excited. Yay. We’ve got a man.

I had a lot of fun crafting this diaper cake.  It was the first time that I have used red and the first time that I have used a plush cake topper.  I usually use gross-grain ribbon.  I didn’t this time.  I think it turned out cute!

    Play Group a Success

    with 3 comments

Whew, we made it. And, we made it good, girls. Yay!

Balls, boys, girls, toys, laughter, smiles, merriment and jovial pleasurements filled our house today.   Beatrice and I were hostesses for a morning playgroup.   As hostess-playgroup-newbies it was wild, crazy, chaotic, and loads of fun.

We go to a lot of play dates but usually shy at the opportunity to have people at our house.

Due to a long night from the night-weaning process (and, I do mean L-O-N-G), I opted for a culinary quickie including donut holes and sesame street crackers. The store-bought snacks were yummy! I didn’t even have time to get juice for the group on my morning sprint for food to serve.  We had cold water. Poor kids, right?  Despite the lack of home-baked-ness the donute holes & crackers were a hit.

Brian is thrilled that we hosted the amusement because the house got an all over cleaning.  “Can you have these more often,” he bargained today.  “I will help clean if you will have more of them,” he volunteered.

Even Barry and Sugar liked the event.  ”Please have another one soon,” they barked.   They scavenged the living room rug for all morsels of dropped food upon the conclusion of the event.  They scored a few cracker bits and pieces of donut.  Our maid (ie. me) REALLY likes that!

The whole family is ready to do it again, and again.

Beatrice told Elmo and Barry to be on their best behavior before her friends arrived.

    Breastfeeding Tips

    with 6 comments

    5/365: Breast Cancer Awareness
     by amersholyfire

Before I had kids, I never thought I would breastfeed. Now that I recollect, I never really considered what I would do when it came to feeding my child until I was about 9 months pregnant, heading down the home-stretch.

Like it so often happens in life, I found myself pregnant at the same time as my sister and my friend Chrissy. For each of us, it was our first. Naturally, since we were all professionals who were all due around the same time, we kept each other abreast of all of our lastest findings: the safest car seats, the best rated cribs, the “must-read” pregnancy books, clothes sales, parenting tips, etc. And in our search for “the best” we all were in agreement that the best nourishment for our new bundles of joy would be breastmilk. And so each of us was committed to giving it a shot.

And so what seemed like such a simple decision, took us all by surprise when we found out that is a most complicated undertaking. We all hear how it is “the most natural thing” and how “our bodies are made for it”, but there’s no way to truly know what it’s like until you’re “knee-deep” and swimming right in it.

As with many of you reading this post, I can just hear your stories; both good and bad. Probably like many of you, I just thought: “Okay, so you take the baby, hold it to your chest, and viola, the feeding begins!” It’s easy and it’s natural, instictive. Yeah, right! Then I find out there is a whole new vocabulary like “latching on” and “colostrum.” All of a sudden, I wondered why I didn’t do more homework and really research this topic during my pregnancy – but no matter, I’m from the old school. Once I decide to do a job, I do it!

After breastfeeding my daughter, I’ve learned these basic truths:

-No matter how determined you are, it takes two to tango: Your little one has to be ready, willing, and ABLE (yes in caps) to breastfeed, no matter how much you want it to happen.

-The sooner you start pumping the better. Ask the hospital for a pump and get on schedule: This really helps get your production on track. I rented a hospital grade pump from a home-health store. I was producing milk like a machine!

-There’s no substitute for experience: Talk to other breastfeeding moms if this is your first time trying it. You’ll be suprised at how much you learn from a group of women who really love to talk.

-Don’t give up! If this is what you want for your little one, it IS possible even with a preemie and mulitiples. You can do it.

-Make goals that are attainable: my initial goal was 1 month. After I celebrated making it that far, I tried to reach the 3 month mark. Once I made it to that goal, I was in a groove so I decided to push for another 3 months. Now, we are almost 11 months and going strong. I would have never dreamed!

-Convenience, convenience, convenience: This one is self explanatory.

-Don’t forget to buy some lanolin cream: Hospitals usually provide this as a parting gift too, thank goodness!

-Invest in a comfortable robe or pajamas since this will most likely be your dress of choice for the first 4-6 weeks. This is one of the only things I bought for myself. Some cute polka-dot jamies from Josphines that buttoned up the front. They were cute and comfortable. I didn’t mind answering the door (to my friends, of course) in them.

As for weaning your baby, that is where I’M asking for advice. I never thought I would make it to 11 months with my Sweet Pea (or Bea, rather) but here we are: she still likes to nurse before naptime when we are at home, right before bed, and at a very early 3:30am every morning. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that we still have this time together and I know this is great for her development. But sleeping in until 6am when Poppy wakes up is rather tempting…did I say VERY tempting.

So if you decide to try breastfeeding, whether you do it for 2 days, 2 months, or 2 years, just remember that you are blessed for the time you had together. Good luck!

Free Credit Report Dot Com Pirate Commercial

    with 114 comments

Okay, I found another commercial that I like. It’s hilarious.  Maybe I am watching more television than I have been disclosing.  The ad I am referring to is the Free Credit Report Dot Com Pirate Commercial.  Doesn’t it make you laugh?

Apparently:  Because of Identity theft, a man is forced to work in fish food restaurant and where a pirate suit. He and fellow scallywags sing about it.

    Lyrics:
They say a man should always dress for the job he wants
so why am I dressed up like a pirate in this restaurant.
It’s all because some hacker stole my identity.
Now I’m in here every evening serving chowder and iced tea.
Should have gone to freecreditreport.com (yeehaa!)
I could have seen this coming at me like an atom bomb.
They monitor your credit and send you email alerts.
So you don’t end up selling fish to tourists in t-shirts.

Here’s the real site to get your report:  https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

The singer in the commercial is Eric Violette. It is not a real band, rather he is a comedien.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I think he has done all the Free Credit Report Dot Com Commercials:  NEW CAR, and my favorite, DREAM GIRL.

    B’s Walks

    with 3 comments

The weather is GREAT in Georgia.  It feels like summer. In fact, I have spring fever!

Beatrice, Brian, the dogs, and I went on a walk on Sunday.  We enjoy it. So, does B!  I have to admit: these walks are a few of MY favorite things.

    Fordham Family Christmas

    with 6 comments

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have Christmas at Granny Hulsey’s?” Denny told Uncle Clisby. The comment ignited sparks in Clisby’s head as he hustled the family to rejuvenate the old farm house by extensive cleaning and a garage sale. According to Cousin Dick it wasn’t really a sale. “People were taking truckloads for $50.00. And, we were asking them to take more,” he laughed.

Granny Fordham passed away in 2004 but the house had been abandoned for years before due to her Alzheimer’s. Making Denny’s wish come true required a lot of love, a lot of time, and a lot of effort.

It was special to share my husband’s family Christmas at the old house, full of nostalgia, laughter, and life. Sitting there, I could only imagine the Christmas’ of years past. I could see Granny Hulsey smiling as I could feel the warmth of her spirit wrapped around each person there.

The aged drapes, tired carpet, and doddering furniture seemed to glow despite the years of neglect.

Upon all the children opening their gifts from under the small, runty, teensy tree unearthed from storage, there were two equal-sized, wrapped gift boxes.

“Denny…Brian” someone called, “these are for you.” Bullets of sweat began to bead on my husband’s forehead.  He prepared for the embarressment he anticipated. ”I feel a practical joke hovering,” Brian whispered. Handed the gifts at the same time, they opened the boxes simultaneously.

     Denny       Brian

The lifted top exposed a clear plastic bag with a blanket of brown and mustard crotchet. A little piece of paper was on top. The boys opened the paper that said:

    Dear Brian, Dear Denny:

I crocheted this afgan and pillow as a gift for your wedding.  Wishing you the best life ever.

    Much love, Granny Jane

Brian’s voice quivered as he read the note aloud.  Without a dry eye in the room, you could not help but feel the presence and the love of Granny Jane.  She was there, hugging everyone, loving everyone, and shining on everyone.

    “Merry Christmas,” she whispered.

Without her voice-less prompting & without her gentle touching, Denny would have never suggested the locale.  While Clisby and family wouldn’t have cheerfully decorated the place, and the gifts would have remained hidden and concealed (possibly destroyed by varments).

Granny Jane just works that way.

Even after her life on earth she is STILL full of surprises and acts of kindness.

Little Miss S – Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians

    without comments

Back in college I loved Edie Brickell. I remember blaring her tunes in my car as I headed up the hill of the Sussex Apartments headed to class. I don’t know why her voice congers that memory from my days at UGA, but it does.  She has one of the best voices in all genres of music.  Admittedly, her follow-up albums never compared to  Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, they were always good – not as amazing, but definitely good.

Then she married the super-rich Paul Simon.  I guess, she decided that she did not have to work any more. Lucky her, right?  But now she is coming back, as part of an indie duo called Heavy Circles. I’ve only heard one song so far.

I am in the mood for my one of my favorites from her debut album, Little Miss S. Click here if you want to listen, too.

    Lyrics to Little Miss S:

shooting up junk in the bathroom
makin it with punks on the floor
livin the scene of her limmisine
Little Miss S. in a mini dress
    living it up to die
in a blink of the public eye

day-glo point in an electric chair
electric dye in her lovers hair
a pretty sight in the middle of the night
made up for everyone to see
swinging on the branch of a broken family tree

you got a lot of living to do without (x2)
you got a lot of living to do without life

the village idiots in her bed
never cared that her eyes were red
never cared that her eyes were dead
in the hours that her face was alive
it was the thing just to be by her side

you got a lot of living to do without (x2)
you got a lot of living to do without life

    hey, alright

you got a lot of living to do without (x2)
you got a lot of living to do without life

you got a lot of living to do without (x2)
you got a lot of living to do without life

Little Miss S. is actually about Edie Sedgewick, a 60s top model who got addicted to heroin, hung out with Andy Warhol, and died really really early. Dark, yes, I know but the sound is really good and clean and totally Edie.

    Dream Home Win a Disaster

    with 6 comments

Remember the beautiful HGTV 2008 Dream Home that I told you about

The first floor of the house has a garage with a sports closet – because you’re definitely want to get in the fishing action in the  Well girls, I have been dreamin’ of a new vacation spot since I posted the link.  A pool, a cabana boy, a Yukon to drive while on vacation, a tan to cover my motherhood-whitehood, and a lot of fishing, swimming, and margarrrrritas.  Ahhhh, yeah.

The clear water and fine sand of the Florida Keys beat the Georgia Coast any day!

But, I am wondering…would it be a tax nightmare?  I am not an accountant but consider myself pretty-okay with numbers. I don’t want to be a party pooper but it is simply not adding up to me.

Case in point:  apparently Don Cruz of Illinois was the last winner.  Winning the Dream home seemed to be the answer to his family’s financial problems, and it was if they considered it a gift of money after taxes and not an actual home.

Remember, I am looking for a new beach house.  But, I guess, I could look at it like a lottery.  The money would be fine (a-okay with me).  But, did you know that the Cruz’s did not even even win the land with the home! The land is owned by the city of Tyler, Texas.

I think, winning the Dream Home is more like winning the lottery than an actual home as the televised building is more a promotion than a home give away.  Is that what you are gathering?

The Cruz’s booty, the $1.5 million Dream Home, included $600,000 federal and $30,000 in property taxes.  Nice work, Cruz’s. Who wants to win that?  More,  they won other gifts they had to pay taxes on, too and they had to pay for the upkeep of the house ie. electricity, landscaping, etc. The house they won in 2005 was up for auction, yesterday, January 8, 2008. No, I am not kidding.

“WORRY DOLL LEGEND – There is a legend amongst the Highland Indian villages of Guatemala: “If you have a problem, then share it with a worry doll. Before going to bed, tell one worry to each doll, then place them beneath your pillow. Whilst you sleep, the dolls will take your worries away!”

Maybe I should get the Cruz’s a full set of Worry Dolls.  I’ll order a dozen and a half of those please!

According to Michael Emilio, no Dream Home winner has EVER lived in their prize!  And, Emily Yarborough, the HGTV spokeswoman even admits it, “We maintain that the Dream Home sweepstakes is just about living your dream” not necessarily living in THEIR dream home.

Hmm…I am rethinking my dream of the Dream Home.   Maybe I am glad I haven’t had a chance to enter yet.  Maybe I am happy to NOT have a dream house in the keys.

On second thought, I’ll take my chances. I will keep dreaming!

    Google Yourself

    with 2 comments

According to Seth Godin, one of the first things you should do this year is Google Yourself. He’s right. You should.  Why not, everyone else is?  I guarantee you that others have googled you.  Whether for your business or for your self – you owe it to yourself.  Here’s what Seth suggests (and if you don’t know who this guru his, he’s a master, a god-himself, you better google him, too):

One of the first things you should do this year:

Google yourself. If you’re a salesperson, your prospects already do.
If you’re looking for a job, your prospective employers already do.
If you’ve got a job, your co-workers already do.

What do they see? Do you know?

If you don’t like it, you can fix it. Start a blog, even if it’s just a few pages worth. Have some colleagues suggest you for wikipedia (if the powers that be think you’re notable enough) or make sure you’re represented on HubPages or Squidwho or write an article for ChangeThis.

You can be finished by tonight. It’s worth it.

    Buying Old Barns

    with 6 comments

Wow. This article from the Timesis SO inspiring to me.  I love the idea. I love old barns.
A couple bought an old, dilapidated, crappy barn north of Manhattan for $150K and renovated to make it warm and livable. The idea of buying a crummy old barn or warehouse and fixing it up gets me so excited.  If you came to my wedding you will know how much I like this idea.  Doesn’t it sound romantic and fun.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a farm house to vacation to, especially in upstate New York?  Brian and I spent a long time exploring upstate New York when we did our 1/2 year lap around the United States.  It’s God’s Country up there.
A place in the country for my dogs to run free (and me, too) sounds so enticing and appealing.  Brian, get your project calendar out and your tool belt positioned!

    Haley is Here

    with 2 comments

I have been lame about carrying my camera with me lately.  I didn’t even have it when Haley arrived!  Call me crazy. Call me awful.  I know, I know. I feel TERRIBLE.  I did hijack Dell’s Camera and snap a few pictures of Beatrice, Brian, Haley, and Kelly.  Now, I am sitting anxiously awaiting my shots.  In the mean time, I am re-posting Megan’s post here. She’s a good Auntie! And, welcome to the world Haley. Welcome to the world, girl. We are SO glad you are finally here. We love you!

Haley & Aunt MeganOriginally uploaded by megandenny841

Welcome to the world, Haley Renea! She was born on January 3rd, weighing in at a whopping 8 lbs. 12 oz. She’s 21 inches of beautiful baby girl. I am already so in love! She has the cutest, chubbiest cheeks (full of sugar) that I have ever seen, and she has her mommy’s nose, mouth, and chin. Congrats Kelli & Dell! You have once again made me a super-proud auntie! Gosh, I’m so jealous.

    Home Birth Article

    with 5 comments

Megan at A Look Into My World has recently included new links to non-traditional childbirth information on her blog.  I think she is exploring her options. She is a smart girl!  When I stumbled upon this post from Aimee at Living, Learning, and Loving Simply I thought of her so I decided to repost it here.  This is a nice post Aimee!

This is Beatrice at the Hospital. The person taking her vitals was our midwife. The wonderful thing about a midwife is they do all of the “doctoring” and all of the “nursing.” It is incredibly personal. It’s not for everybody, but it was definitely the right decision for Brian, Beatrice and I. If you have any questions about the experience I am happy to answer. It was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Even though I do not feel I was the best patient. If we have another child I promise to follow my heart and not my family on the phone.

    Think for Yourself

Note: this is Aimee’s article – See above - I have lived most of my life doing what others tell me to do. Whoever seems trustworthy, spiritual, intelligent or socially mature is who I will listen to and make decisions based on what they say without much thought of my own. It took listening to the wrong people and making wrong life decisions with painful consequences to wake me up to my irresponsibility of not thinking for myself. As I was planning a home birth with my fourth child, I had a wonderful midwife who taught me to make informed decisions. I just wanted her to tell me what to do in my pregnancy (just like I did with the doctors in my other pregnancies) without my taking responsibility in understanding my body, nutritional health, testing, herbs, circumcision, vaccinations, etc. She would give me lots of information from lots of different sources that would give me both sides of an issue. Then she would ask me, “What is your decision?”At first this made me really uncomfortable. I was used to entrusting myself into the hands of others without thought and realized how often I just want someone to tell me what to do. I don’t want to take the time to really understand the issues and also to have to take the responsibility for the consequences! If we just listen to others’ opinions and things go wrong, we can just blame them. Being an informed decision-maker means I must take time, learn to think, learn to discern, pray, and make a decision based on all the facts along with the Lord’s leading. It causes me to become more intuitive and to ultimately entrust myself to the Lord.Having the home birth changed my life because it truly empowered me. The process showed me that I had been a blind follower throughout my life (mostly out of sheer fear) and that having a home birth was something I decided to do without the influence of anyone else in my life. And I did it! And I became responsible for my body and my daily living in a whole new way.

Being an empowered thinker transformed every area of my life after that home birth. I simply cannot get enough of the library or the internet for research. I feel free for the first time in my life to question everything in my faith, my values, my habits, my eating choices, my finances, my relation to creation, my homeschooling, my parenting, my home, my community, my church, my hobbies, and on and on. I read a wide variety of authors and viewpoints on every topic that sparks interest in me. I examine, talk with Mike, pray, compare ideas with the truth of the Bible, realize that there is sooooo much I just don’t know in life, and then jump into learning even more! My brain has come alive! My faith has deepened and been encouraged, enriched, and expanded…God is bigger than I ever imagined and more wonderful than I ever dreamed. Many of my lifestyle choices are changing and evolving as I seek to find a simple and more natural way of living in every single area of my life. I want to live life well and with authenticity.

Why do you do what you do? Are you just going with the cultural flow? Or with the culture of your faith? Or with your family or friends? Are you afraid to question life? To take full responsibility for your choices?

Be empowered to walk your own walk in dependence on the Lord. Read both sides of every issue and know all your options in the daily choices you make. Talk to or read many different people in areas that interest or concern you. Live deliberately, responsibly, humbly and with mindful intention. Listen to the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. Trust Him and your gut.

    Enjoy the expanding journey!
