Happy Weekend

with one comment

Photobucket
This photo from Mrs. Plain Jane (from Carolyne Roehm’s website) brightened my morning. I hope it brightens yours, and your weekend.  We are off to the beach to my sister’s for Lilly’s first birthday party. Yahoo! Beatrice, Barry and I are braving the trip alone — two girls, one dog at the beach — it sounds yummy. I can’t wait. By the way, we did get one of those free breakfast burritos from Micky D’s this morning. The McSkillet was McGood and not so Mcbest for my diet.

Happiest Weekend to you!

What do you wish you could say to someone?

with 5 comments

Karen Sugarpants wrote this about what she wishes she could say to people, and it got me thinking…

What do you wish you could say to someone?

Here’s mine:

  1. If you could see what you have created through sober eyes, you’d be very proud.
  2. If you weren’t so freaking angry at the little things, you might see the amazing big things around you.
  3. You come off really creepy.
  4. Did you really think it would not get back to me? I was madder than hell to find out that you were behind the insanity, the gossip and the rumor, but I forgive you because I realize it all worked out for the best. Now? Now I am just sad for you.
  5. I wish I could understand why you did the things you did to me. I tried so hard not to be resentful or bitter to you because that hurts me more than you, but I am still struggling with it. You hurt me down to the soul. Do you have any idea how much you hurt me? Do you even care?
  6. I miss your friendship so much. We laughed, cried and shared so much joy and happiness. We partied, too.  Memories of you ALWAYS make me smile. We haven’t talked or hung-out in ages. I wouldn’t even know how to reach out to you at this point, but know that I wish you well. And would love to talk to you again.
  7. I’m sorry. Really sorry.
  8. Stand up for yourself. You have so much to offer but you just don’t let people see the real you. I like the real you. And, others do to. Let yourself shine while being “you.”
  9. If you had to live through some of the things I have lived through, you might not be so quick to judge. Walk a mile in my shoes and then you will understand why I am who I am and do the things I do.  Don’t be so narrow-minded.
  10. Don’t be such a snob. You don’t come off better than anyone. Rather, you look silly, childish, stricken with issues, and un-confident.
  11. Quit saying such ugly things about her. You don’t even know her. More, I really like her and she is a blessing to my life.  You don’t know where she’s been or why she did it so don’t condemn her for it.
  12. Racism and bigotry is really out.  Pride in your heritage is fine. But when you call other people names and scream your hatred you show your ignorance and you look like a low bred, backwoods redneck. It screams WHITE TRASH.  It is embarrassing and blood boiling. It hurts me, it hurts my child, it hurts my husband and it hurts the world.   We have close friends of all creeds, ethnicity, religions and backgrounds from all parts of the world.

So, what are yours?

Why are Leap Years Used?

with 2 comments

Why are Leap Years Used?  Click Here.

Oh, and don’t forget to get your McSkillet today. I saw a commercial that said that McDonalds is giving away free McSkillets today. Weird.

McDonalds’s customers will be offered a free burrito with the purchase of a medium or large drink. The McSkillet, composed of scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, salsa, onions, peppers and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla, retails for about $2.49. A large coffee costs about $1.33, depending on the market.Ad Age Magazine

Mother of the Year

with 2 comments

It’s the first of March girls, so you’ve got Mother’s Day on the brain.

Huh?  Do what?

You’re thinking about how horribly cold and gray the last half of February was as you ponder the arrival of spring?

Weird.  I’m totally thinking about Mother’s Day after reading Design Mom’s post!  This year’s Mother of the Year event, sponsored by Mother’s Day Central sounds like so much fun with so much booty.

There is no question, you should nominate someone. Way-so easy, the prize is great:$5000 to the winner.
Plus flowers.

I really dig flowers. And I love $5000.  Go check it out. Nominations are accepted through March 5th — that’s only a couple of days away. Who will you nominate? Your mother? Your sister? Your friend? Better question: who will your husband and children nominate? You, of course!

Bright Blue Wall Paint

with 6 comments

I know this is bold, but I really like this bright blue with all the white by Robyne Curry. I am in a painting mood. Can you tell?

Blue is actually not what I am hearing. Yellow is calling my name. Yeeesssss, yellow. Cheerful, warm, sunny, I-love-it-yellow.

I am thinking: Home Page
, no nonsense, yellow. Or, semolina,  yellow.  What do you think?

Help!

Yellow for the dining room?  Yes, as I think it will bring a bit of whimsy and light-hardness to the room. We have a 1908 Tudor, rather bungalow-ish cottage style house.  Reflecting the period, it is small with lots of walls and little closet space. I just don’t think we need the dining room so formal, so traditional.

Do you think yellow is too informal for a dining room?  Is it too waggish, too curious and chancy?  Do you know what I mean?

    Happy Bellies at Brighter Day

    with 2 comments

I found this on my morning sip of Southern Mamas.  I am reposting it here, but mozy over to her ever-s0-mommy-fabulous-blog for more leads on great finds.

happybaby_logo.gifBrighter Day Natural Foods Market near Forsyth Park in Savannah now carries HAPPYBELLIES, the first baby cereal with probiotics and the only organic baby cereal with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid considered beneficial for the brain.

Probiotics are the “good bacteria” that are found naturally in foods like yogurt and may result in health benefits. Read more here.
Beloved pediatrician Dr. Robert Sears recommends happy-bellies-can.jpg HAPPYBELLIES and has worked with the dry cereal’s company, Nurture, Inc. to develop healthy meals for babies and toddlers as well as provide feeding tips on product boxes and the company Web site.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the HAPPYBABY, which created the cereal, partners with Project Peanut Butter to help feed starving children in Malawi.”

    Cherry on Top Birthday

    with 4 comments

Well, I have been super busy lately. Life has been exhausting as Brian, Beatrice, and I recovered from last week’s flu and the virus attack.  Plus, my niece Lilly (who is three days older than Beatrice) is in town so we have been visiting her each afternoon. Sure, it doesn’t sound so laborious until you toss in a Kindermusik Class, red b errands, a breakfast date, a play date, and library story time.

Sweat is beading on my brow just telling you about it!

Any way, I have the best news EVER.  My sister will be in town for my birthday. YAY. Who Ray. Whew. Hew. Yeaaaaaah, baby! I do not know what we will do, but it will be awesome just to have her in town.  Whether it’s chatting on my porch or sipping on wine, the evening will be most perfect by her presence.

There’s not much better than a sister. A sister is the cherry-on-top of an already-delicious sundae.  She just makes everything that much better. Ahhhh yes, and I have her for my birthday.  Sweeeeeet.

Oprah Suggests Reading A New Earth

    with 4 comments

      yes
    She asked. I said, “yes.”

I bought the book.  More, I reserved my seat for the class.  I type as I blush.  My fingers move as fast as the pink curtain drags across my face. Oh, how embarrassing. How weird and how New Age.

Is Eckhart Tolle composition a  happiness power tool?  Hmm…I don’t know about that. I guess I will see if A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose  is the well-being jump-start that is claimed.

Oprah suggests it is a new “kind of reading experience” that is a “spiritual landmark.”

If the whole world is going to be awakened then the one thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to be comatose.  I don’t want to be snoozing in the back of the class. Rather, I want the inner-me to be aroused, re-born, kindled and vivified.

“Girl, you come out of there and lets find your purpose,” I instruct myself. Lets be awakened.  Lets join the biggest classroom ever. Lets get stirred up, stimulated, and activated. Come on, inner-me. We can do it.

A New Earth. A New Me.

Do you want to find your inner purpose?  Do you want to find peace and understanding?

    She asked. I said, “yes.”

Casino Worker Takes Perks Too Far

    without comments

I heard this on today’s Morning Edition on NPR. Yes, it is a true story.  People amaze me!

Morning Edition, February 26, 2008 · A man who worked for an Iowa casino was awarded a free night’s hotel stay to mark a year’s employment. He sought unemployment benefits after he was fired after repeatedly calling downstairs and asking the hotel to send up a hooker.

A court has refused his request for unemployment.

    Local Eggs ARE Different

    with one comment

Happy At Home proved my thesis. There IS a difference in the local eggs and the grocery store eggs. I bought my first dozen a week or so ago from L & D Farm Fresh Produce.  No hormones. No cages. No pesticides. No cruelty.  And, all the while no guilty mama conscious.

Thanks for the awesome post.  I can’t figure out how to trackback her post so I am reposting it.

THIS PICTURE SAYS IT ALLTo the left: Local, farm raised, free range chicken egg.

To the right: Store bought, from a cage-kept, grain eating, never-saw-the-light-of-day-much-less-grass chicken.

    Bubba Garcias

    with 5 comments

On our weekend foray to St. Simons we ate a Bubba Garcias located in the Red Fern Village for Sunday Brunch.  A casual Mexican Catina,  the affordable menu ranges from $5 – 20

A lively little restaurant, it’s one of those places you can kick back, relax and enjoy a margarita or two.  With Baby B in tow we didn’t partake in alcoholic beverages — I am just saying, it is the perfect place for it.  They have a tequila bar in addition to a full bar.  You can have the cervacas of your choice!  At the same time it is family friendly.

As we dined on outdoor makeshift tables, I ordered my favorite:  Cali Club Tacos. They are the best tacos ever! The tacos are overflowing with layors fried chicken, spinach, lots of cheese, and chipolte cream sauce topped with applewood smoked bacon.  This combination of ingredients is yummy to my tummy.

Beatrice enjoyed the rice, beans, tomatoes, chips and cheese.

The service was very poor.  Admittedly, we have enjoyed excellent service at this restaurant on past visits. However, this experience is spotted with empty beverages, a forgotten cheese dip order, an early check, and an incorrect drink order.  All debts could be forgiven with a busy restaurant or even acknowledgement from the staff.  Neither existed.  The customers were sparse and our waitress appeared hung over, in a constant state of gloom while plagued with amnesia.

On a scale of one to five I rate the experience a 3+ due to the service.  Other than the service dilemma, it is definitely a 5. It was just what the doctor ordered for an easy Sunday morning.

I found this review of Bubba Garcias, here:

    4.2 out of 5
    Food
    4.3 out of 5
    Service
    4.2 out of 5
    Cleanliness
    3.9 out of 5
    Value
    4.1 out of 5
    Based on 26 responses
And, here’s a rendering of the interior of the restaurant. Though, I must tell you this image makes the dining area appear much larger than in reality.
    Happy dining!

    Weekend Beachy Break

    with 4 comments

“Some days are better than others,” Barry says while catching his toy at the beach.

      Beatrice agrees.
     And, so does Papa!

We had a beachy break this weekend. And, boy did we need it. It was great.   St. Simons whispered our names on Friday.  We listened.  We loaded up the car and headed her way as we set our clocks to island time.  The weather was amazingly spring-like.  Even though it’s February, the beach was busy with swimmers, golfers, families, and dogs.

Hmm…a former classmate at the University of Georgia J-School is launching a fab, new project.  She’s my favorite Charston-ite.  Let’s check it out!

In an age when neighbors are disconnected and societies are fractured due to religion, creed, politics, race, geography, socio-economics, and countless other markers, the U Truth Project seeks to discover what humans share as common beliefs—or universal truths.

Armed with little more than a camera, a laptop, a copious supply of anti-malaria pills, and a tentative route, adventurer Ida Becker will circumnavigate the globe while asking the people she meets to share one statement of truth.

The U Truth Project, a web-based photo documentary, launches March 08.

Beatrice could really use some of those for all of her books. Maybe I should get her a few.  Have I mentioned lately that she is infatuated with books…the same ones.  Of all of her collection, she wants me to read the same three books over, and over, and over.

I have been so busy lately that my post haven’t been very personal.  I keep thinking that I will get a chance to leave a post about each little exciting thing — but there just isn’t enough time.  So, here’s what has been going in my Moon Dreams and Day Beams:

    1. Beatrice took her first steps last night!  We are so proud of her.

    2. We went to a 30th birthday party that was SO much fun.  All the guests wore black and white while the birthday girl wore her favorite color. It was our first date in a very long time. It was Beatrice first time spending the night away from home!!!

    3.  Papa got Mama new ride. Way to go Brian. I LOVE it!

    4. I found this silver platter for 2.99 (!!!) at a thrift store.  Now, I have to figure out how to clean it.

    5. We have found out that Beatrice will eat ANY thing, even onions!  And, she loves raisin’s.

    6.  I have been forgiving my husband for asking me on a Valentines Date and forgetting to show up.   Yes, I do love him. And yes, I have forgiven him.

    7.  I have been busy loving Miss B.  This takes up most of my time as it is a full time job. I don’t have much time left to blog. She’s the reason for the season so blogging comes in last place on my list of things to do.

    Happy Tuesday!

    Interesting Cardboard Everyday Chair

    with 3 comments

Interesting.  I found this over at Dwell.  I am not so sure that it fits with our motif but it is definitely interesting. Apparently, Gomi Style is YouTube home makeover show where a robot maker and his sidekicks make home furnishings from refuse. Gomi is the Japanese world for trash. In this clip, they demonstrate how to make chairs from layers of cardboard.  It’s pretty, well, interesting.

I bet Danny Seo would like this!

    Leap Year

    with 4 comments

Like, Chicken Fried Therapy, I have always been bewitched by the concept of a Leap Year. Haven’t you?

I am bedazzled. Really, I mean, it is unbelievable that Julius Caesar’s people, who must have been busy calculating ways to murder him, still had time to figure out that the 365 day calendar wasn’t matching up with the Earth’s rotation, actually 365 days….and ¼.

How in the world do people figure out things like this?

Chicken Fried Therapy (and The Busy Dad Blog and Piper from Bliss in Bloom)  is launching a TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH 08, a month-long campaign.  Hop over there and check it out.

I’ll be here trying to figure out how anyone figured out the extra quarter-of-a-day in each 365.

To find out more about The Year of the Rat, click here.

Chinese New Year falls on Feb 7th this year.  That’s today.

I hope you are getting ready!

Rat is associated with aggression, wealth, charm, and order, yet also associated with death, war, the occult, pestilence, and atrocities. And, for all you Mamas expecting babies in the year of the Rat, it looks like we will have a clever, ambitious, creative, hard-working, fastidious, charming and sociable, but can be a bit stingy when it comes to sharing their wealth or possessions bunch.  It’s an honor to be born a Rat!

Rats have been given a bad rap in Western Culture but in China, the rat is a respected intuitive creature, synonymous with courage and an enterprising character. Rats know how to come up with solutions, take care of themselves and others without problems.Besides being curious and intelligent with a vivid imagination, rats are very lively and need oodles of attention (mental and physical stimulation).  To sum it up, the positive side of the rat personality includes being easy-going, smart, magnetic, quick witted and well-liked.
On the flip side, rats have also been known to be a tad cool, calculating, selfish, and protective when they’re not in top form. What motivates Rats? You guessed it — money and status.  “Earth Rats” (those born in 1948 and 2008), are said to be very honorable folk who love to do things around the home and enjoy a stable life. Although a titch stingy with their moolah, they are cheerful with friends although are prone to stress. For more on the little known life of ratties, and what to expect from these ripsnorting rodents in 2008, don’t hesitate to check out what makes a rat tick!

And, for the rest of us (who aren’t expecting this year):  in the “Year of the Rat”, we can expect 12 months of plentiful opportunities and prospects not to mention being relatively free of turbulence, (which is great to know especially if you’re planning on making some long-term investments, starting new projects, or keeping the home fires burning brightly).

    Brown Velvet Chair

    with one comment

Okay, so I found one more thin at Beach Bungalow 8 that I adore.  Her blog is so inspiring!  It’s that chair.  The brown, velvet one that looks amazingly comfy.  I like the lines and the mini-ruffles around the bottem.  Have you seen any like it. Is there anyway to find out where I can get one. It would look amazing in our bedroom.   Any hints?

    Beautiful Bed

    without comments

Wow. What does this do for you?  Beach Bungalow 8, my new favorite blog, posted it. I just can’t help but share it with you.  The bed is big, majestic and dramatic.  And, the bright, funky, modern textle really brings fun to the piece.  Oh, it screams Brian’s name. For that matter it screams MINE!

You want to catch the next plane out?  I sure do. This brings a connotation of resort, relaxation and cabana boys bearing beverages.  Yummy.

Get your serving arms ready boys, we’re coming!

    Food For Statesboro Library Fines

    with one comment

If you are in Statesboro, and like me, you have a few overdue library books. Guess what?  You can get out of the fines until February 16th! All you have to do is bring in one canned item per dollar in fine.

    That’s amnesty. And, that’s a deal!

    Food for Fines

    Where:Statesboro Regional Library When: Feb. 1-16, 2008
The Statesboro Regional Library presents one of our most popular events, “Food for Fines” beginning Friday, Feb. 1 through Saturday, Feb. 16. During that time library patrons may bring in 1 canned good in exchange for $1.00 in regular overdue fines on library materials. Up to $5.00 in fines will be forgiven.

Library Director Lois Roberts said, “The ‘Food for Fines’ program is our Valentine’s gift to the community and to The Food Bank, Inc. of Statesboro, which will receive all donations brought to the library. This year all five of our affiliated libraries will be participating at the same time, and various charities in those communities will benefit.”

The program provides library patrons with a way to reduce or eliminate overdue fines, and provides much-needed donations to The Food Bank, Inc.

Canned items such as soups, vegetables, beans, pasta dishes and meats are welcome, as well as rice, oatmeal, cream of wheat or grits packed in individual servings, dried beans, dried pastas, and dried milk may be donated, according to Alton Odom, director of The Food Bank, Inc.

    I Love this Baby Bedding

    with 6 comments

    mi_kate2.JPG

One of my girlfriends is expecting a baby girl this summer. She has picked out her bedding.  Gorgeous. Simply Gorgeous.  It’s Serena and Lilly.  And, I LOVE it! I like it so much that it inspires me to create a new nursery.

Oh, I would need a new addition for that. On second thought, I will live vicariously through my crony.  Beatrice isn’t ready for any sisters or brothers yet!

Isn’t this bedding brilliant? It looks so fun, and whimsical, and fresh and clean. And, this friend has a  (huge) gift for decorating so I know the nursery will be splendiferous. It will be pleasing, and cute and perfect.

Because Brian and I opted to not find out the sex of Baby Hulsey, I didn’t have the luxury of selecting an overly feminine scheme. Instead, I selected a simple cotton batiste with clean lines design from Lulla Smith. Poor Mama. Oh, no whining for me. Pinch. Pinch myself.  What am I saying! I love my bedding.  But, next time maybe I will find out the sex just so I can have something more colorful.

This is so cute.  More, the description is perfect. Great bedding baby A!

    Vacant Moments are Rare

    without comments

    Speaking of riches…

I would not exchange my leisure hours
for all the wealth in the world.
    -Comte de Mirabeau

Thank you Messy, Thrilling, Life for the post and the picture each is lovely.  As my leisure hours are distinctly different from a year ago (and, I must mention very rare), I find this quote most appropriate.  There isn’t a price for those few vacant moments, moments overflowing with freedom.

Idle hours are scarce these days, yet highly sought.

HappY Week. May you have plenty of wealthy leisure this week.

    10 Things To Do Today

    with 4 comments

I subscribe to The Simple Dollar for facile ways to manage money.  They offer investment, thrift, frugality, financial management and wealth building suggestions.  The typical post is straightforward, a little abstract, number oriented, un-involved & non-personal. It’s expectantly practical while it is perfectly uncolored.

But, today’s newsletter is different. It’s more emotional than usual.  Surprisingly, it’s intimate and a little privy.

I like it.  Per their post, I plan to live a rich life. I hope to live a rich life. And, I will start today.

Here are the ten things they suggest (and  that I hope that) I to do today:

    10 Things To Do Today

    1. Play with a child. There are only 6,574 days between a child’s birth and their eighteenth birthday. Don’t waste a single one.

    2. Keep that wallet in your pocket. Time is money and money is time – don’t spend either without a good reason.

    3. Stop and smell the roses. You’re never too busy to enjoy the simple pleasures that life affords you.

    4. Tell someone that they’re doing good work and that you appreciate it. Then tell their boss about it.

    5. Do something you’ve never done before. You might have a hidden talent you’ve never known about.

    6. Take a step towards one of your goals. You have goals, right? If you don’t know what the next step is, figure it out – that in itself is a big step.

    7. Laugh out loud, and make someone else do the same.

    8. Put some money away for the future. Anything at all, even if it’s just a dollar. One dollar a day starting at birth in a 4% savings account adds up to $120,000 at age 65. If you put away a bit more than that and just leit it be, you won’t have a thing to worry about when you’re old, just chasing a grandchild across the yard.

    9. Tell someone you love them. Your mother, your wife, your child, a person who influenced your life a ton – whoever you love.

    10. Do something unexpectedly kind for someone else, just to help them out. If they ask you if you want repaid, tell them to just do a favor for someone else.

If I can do all of these things today, and tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that – then I’m in the process of living a truly rich life.

    Let’s get rich ya’ll!

    The Business of Being Born

    with 2 comments

About the Documentary: Birth: it’s a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal. Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?

I want one.  Whiny voice. Teeny-tiny-whiny voice. I want one.

Would you like to share one with me?  Come on let’s share a Saturday treat.  The calories are on me!
