Happy Weekend

with one comment

Happy Weekend!

Oh, what a busy week. Audrey arrived. We met two week old Henry. Megan and Denny announced their preganancy. I spent a day with Dad and Beatrice…alone. My New Orleans buddy came into town. hmm…what else? B busted her lip. I hosted a MOMs Club craft group. I misplaced my camera downloader cord. Well, lots more went on. However, this is a good list to illustrate how busy it is. I have officially wiped my brow as I am ready to kick off my shoes and relax my feet.

Just kick it ladies.

It’s the weekend!

Hull Park Fountain

with 2 comments

Southern Mamas  is SO great about sharing SO great-fun-things-to do:

hull-park-smaller.JPG

Looking for a little diversion from the pool?

Kids can cool off for free in the popular splash fountains @ Hull Park , the diamond-shaped green spot smack in the center of Ardsley Park. The kid-friendly fountains are in the concrete amphitheater near the baseball diamond. The only drawback is hitting the park at the right time when the fountains are on. Best bet is 10:30ish to lunchtime.

The park bisects Atlantic Ave. @ 55th Street. There’s also a playground, complete with unusual find these days, a merry-go round. But be prepared, there’s not much shade other than a picnic pavilion – which makes the splash fountain much more appealing this time of year.

French Lullaby – “La petite poule grise”

with 7 comments

Beatrice watched and listened to this French Lullaby over and over tonight. I admit it is soft and relaxing. I love it, too!

Lyrics:
La petite poule grise
L’était une p’tit’ poul’ (une petite poule)grise
Qu’allait pondre dans l’église
Pondait un p’tit’ coco
Que l’enfant mangeait tout chaud
L’était une p’tit’ poul’ noir
Qu’allait pondre dans l’armoire
Pondait un p’tit’ coco
Que l’enfant mangeait tout chaud
L’était une p’tit’ poul’ blanche
Qu’allait pondre dans la grange
L’était une p’tit’ poul’ rousse
Qu’allait pondre dans la mousse
(L’était une p’tit’ poule beige
Qu’allait pondre dans la neige)
L’était une p’tit’ poule brune
Qu’allait pondre sur la lune
English Lyrics:
Here is the translation I made (sorry for my english) :
‘t was (it was) a little grey hen
who laid in the church
(it) laid a little egg (French children call an egg “coco”)
the child ate this warm egg
‘t was a little black hen
who laid in the closet
(it) laid a little egg
the child ate this warm egg
‘t was a little white hen
who laid in the barn
(it) laid a little egg
the child ate this warm egg
‘t was a little red hen
who laid to lay in the moss
(it) laid a little egg
the child ate this warm egg
(‘t was a little beige hen
who laid in the snow)
‘t was a little brunette hen
who laid on the moon
(it) laid a little egg
the child ate this warm egg

Pretty in Pink

with one comment

Oh girls,

everything is pretty in pink! Funny, Brian and I saw these same chairs at Yard and Haus during a window shopping venture last night. The vibrant display caught our eye, which halted our bike ride. We had to stop. When I saw this photo at Beach Bungalow 8 I couldn’t help but share.

Happy Weekend, again!

ERGO

with 2 comments

I am dreaming of one of these – not the baby or the man but the ERGO baby carrier. My dream contains a used camel color one.

I have decided that Brian and I’s back is the best tool to carry an 18 month around France.  The stroller is too bulky and difficult to manuever on the cobblestone and stairs.

I have researched baby wearing tools as I feel REALLY overwhelmed. There are SO many opinions. Carrying her 100% of the time will be new for us as I am trying to get in shape now.

Amelie fell asleep :-)

I am so glad you asked

with one comment

Normally, I delete those “tagged” emails immediately. However, today in effort to escape the chores of reality I am submitting to one. So, here it is. I have been tagged. And, yes, I am so glad that you asked:

What were you doing ten years ago?

Ten years ago I was quitting my job at SouthComm Publishing, where I was a traveling account Representative selling print advertising to chambers of commerce throughout the southeastern United States. By leaving my job, I was doing my little part of saving the old-island-life by living in an original beach house, taking outside showers, partying like a rock star with my roommate and sister, and doing things like riding bicycles and waves every time that I wanted. Suddenly, my college degree seemed unnecessary (much to my parents disapproval) as I became a waitress and reverted to a youthful lifestyle.

Did I mention, I loved every minute of it?

Five items on your to-do list today.

I operate so much better with lists, but as a stay-at-home mom I’m a slacker about making them:

1. Take Beatrice to the MOMs Club field trip to Brusters Ice Cream!

2. Meet Henry!!!  The new baby on the block.

3. Make deposits for red b power.

4. Clean the kitchen. It is a disaster.

5. Water my flowers. They are dreadful in this South Georgia heat.

Snacks I enjoy.

What would you do if you were a billionaire?

Well, that would certainly open up the possibilities. Travel more. See my family more. Buy myself a few trinkets, like botox, a boob lift, and a new car.  I would order my astrological chart, too. I have always secretly wanted one of those (they just seem like a waste of money).  But don’t forget, I am a philanthropist, and if my bank account ever looked like Oprah’s, I have always said I would focus my giving on animal welfare or underprivileged children or Alzheimer’s research. And, I would.

Speaking of, places I would live.

Globe mobile zgallerie
Photo from Urban Grace’s archives. I think you can buy this globe mobile over at iSuwannee.

I lived in Nashville, Ga until I was two, then moved to Statesboro, Georgia. I spent a few summers in Lousville, Ky and in Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas. I lived in Valdosta and Athens, Ga while going to college. I lived for a few months in Orlando, Florida and in Atlanta, Georgia before returning to Statesboro.  After a little time back at home, I moved to St. Simons, Georgia. On the island is where I met my husband before going on a 1/2 year hiatus to travel around the country. When the tour concluded we moved to Statesboro. In the boro I became a grown-up, got married and had my children, not necessarily in that order. I have an undeniably outstanding group of friends. I could get a ride to the airport, emergency child care, a martini or a casserole with one phone call.  Sometimes without. I don’t just live here, it’s my home.

Mr. Hulsey and I have dreams about moving other places – but that’s another story. And, it seems, they are just that: dreams.  You know what they say, “you can take the boy out of Bulloch county but you can’t take the Bulloch County out of the boy. Well, you can’t get this boy out for very long, either.

In my youth I planned to live in a large city like, NYC, Louisville or San Francisco. But, life and love brought me home. I think I could happily live in Denver, parts of California, Breckenridge or Aspen.

If I were a billionaire as in the previous question, I would buy myself an apartment on an ocean liner that travels the world. I wouldn’t live any where but everywhere, really.

Oh, and between cake and pie? Always pie. Unless, of course, it is Sarah R’s cake.  Her culinary artistry is a trump.

And, my tea is ALWAYS sweet, dear. I do live fifty short miles from Paula, ya’ll.

Weekend Party

with 3 comments

We went to a birthday party over the weekend. Beatrice had a blast as she was asleep before I pulled out of the drive! She LOVES parties. I was shocked by her independence. She has become so confident. While all the other kids were inside she slipped outside to a yard of toys-to-herself.

Mom, she really likes those red and yellow little tykes cars like you want to get for the girls. She even tried to put a lawn mower in the back. Someone said, “she’s packing the car.”

Here are the pictures, see for yourself:

Oh, and Amanda, Lilly’s hand-me-down red dress is so cute. It was perfect for the train themed party!  I bought a cute head band to match but I didn’t get any pictures. I am so terrible about taking photos.

Rustic Baths

with 4 comments

“Loving these rustic images from Toast – wouldn’t it be fabulous to have a long hot bath in that old tin bath out in the middle of nowhere!!” writes Absolutely Beautiful Things.

Oh, yes. I thought as I admired the photo.  Here’s a vote for an outdoor plunge!   Well, on second thought, I think we tried something similar for a few years. Ut. Hum. Homespun hydrotherapy is not a vacation for me.  It wasn’t quite as romantic as it looks. In fact, I precisely remember cursing outdoor showers the day that I left. I prefer not to revel the bare necessities in the open air of nature.

Come on, are you really a fan of outdoor baths?  Have you actually tried this?

Paula Deen’s Squash Casserole

with 3 comments

Paula Deens Squash Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, chopped (we are still using the ones we picked!!!)
  • 4 tablespoon butter
  • 6 cup raw squash
  • 1  cup  crushed Ritz crackers
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon  Paula Deen’s House Seasoning
  • 1 cup  grated cheddar cheese
  • 1  cup  water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Using a heated stewing pot, add 6 cups of raw sliced squash and water, and stir and let stew for 5-10 minutes. Then pour the stewed squash into a colander, covered in a clean rag or cheesecloth, and allow the water and juices to drain by mashing with a spoon.  I didn’t do the whole cheese cloth move. The casserole tasted delish without the measure.

In separate medium size skillet, saute the sliced onion in butter for 5 minutes.

Remove from pan and, using a large bowl, add squash, onions, sour cream, salt, pepper, and sharp cheddar cheese (I added about 1/4 – 1/2 extra cheese – yes, and I wonder why the weight is so hard to lose). Pour mixture into a buttered casserole dish and top with cracker crumbs. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

Yield: 6 servings
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes
Ease of preparation: easy girls, it is super easy!

Porch Party

without comments

According to Daisy Cottage:

Rhondi is throwing an awesome porch party…

Porches are my fave. We live on ours, despite its small size. Some of my best memories are on porches. From my grandmother’s porch to the porch of the beach house to my sorority house porch to my porch now, there isn’t a more grand place in any home. More, there isn’t a better feeling than the kiss of a gentle breeze on my shoulders, the faint smell of flowers in the wind, the subtle sounds of slow quiet conversation and the taste of a slow sip of sweet ice tea that only can be experienced on a porch.

Take a trip over to Rhondi’s Soiree.  The porch party is worth the look-see.

If you have pictures of your porch feel free to send them this way!

Speaking of porches, here is a porch of the place where Brian proposed. It is the porch of the Statsboro Inn. Isn’t it gorgeous

Sex & The City Tonight

with 2 comments

Hi Friends, I’m headed to Sex & The City with a few girlfriends tonight. Have you seen it?  I am so pumped as I can’t wait to see Carrie’s shoe closet!!!

The floors (I have to say floors because if former roommates or family members read this, they will attest that all of my shoes untidily carpeted the bottoms of my closets rather than neatly resting in an organizer) of the closets my life have sparkled with good Gilly’s and brogues, and some some outstanding platforms.  My old plights would laugh hysterically at the slender soles my new Chacos while mocking their dull black natural fiber laces.

“She wears high heels when she exercises,” sings Train in Meet Virgina. Like Carrie, I loved my shoes.  My life couldn’t be described better with another line.  Train’s lyrics say it well.

Things have changed a lot since then for Carrie…and I.

I can’t wait to catch up on the characters lives tonight. I can’t wait to see the movie!

Cosmos, anyone?

FREE Reusable Shopping Bag

with 140 comments

Green Bag LadyThe bag is a gift, use it well!  she says.

This is REALLY amazing. By “THIS” I mean – an amazing spirit, amazing art, and amazing commitment to green living. The Green Bag Lady is offering one FREE reusable Shopping Bag anyone who promises to use it in place of  paper or plastic. I can not refuse an opportunity for new cool bag. Can you?Maybe this is what I need to finally make me quit using plastic. Perhaps it is the beginning of the end of my plastic bag addiction. I am pretty good about recycling, yet haven’t the nerve (or memory to take a bag to the store) to use an eco-friendly bag.  You have to start somewhere. So, here’s my start. I have sent her my info as I look forward to the reception of a handmade bag for my groceries.

Go get your bag, girl!

The lady on the left is Theresa, The Green Bag Lady

Here’s her mission statement from her blog:

I am an artist. I make bags. I will give you a FREE handmade fabric bag if you promise to use it instead of paper or plastic. Each bag has a number in it, I will record your name, city and bag number on this site. The hope is to document the use of these bags all over Nashville and eventually the world. Send me your pictures, your stories, and your extra fabric. Let’s start a revolution. . .one bag at a time!

The Only 7 Investments You Need Now

without comments

So, you want to retire early, help your husband retire early, or go on a swank vacation or two?  The most recent issue of Money Magazine had a blaring cover story: “The Only 7 Investments You Need Now.” According to the article these seven investments will help you plan for those dreams now.  These are big words.  I was intrigued about what they had to say. The seven suggested investments:

1. A blue-chip U.S. stock fund
2. A blue-chip foreign stock fund
3. A small-company fund
4. A value fund
5. A high-quality bond fund
6. An inflation-protected bond fund
7. A money market fund

For each one of these, Money offers some suggestions.  You can read the article, here.

We went to the Barnyard themed Tuesday, which was so great. The children heard stories about barn animals, colored appropriate pages, and watched a video before meandering the the yard filled with a pig, sheep, a donkey, a cow, a turkey, ducks and a goat.

I highly recommend a field trip to the Oatland Island Toddler Tuesday.  We chose to tour the entire island of exotic animals after the “Toddler Tuesday” ceased.  It proved a long day.  The extended visit was a bit more than I should have consummated for a one year old.  Exhaustion set in before we made it to the car.  Abed before departing the parking lot, Beatrice was somniforous all the way to Statesboro.  zzzzzz…

Poor Me. Her car-hibernation provided an energy burst that I wasn’t ready for upon returning home.  Regardless, it was another great day in our calandar of adventures. We loved it!

Mingalaba.  That’s “Hi, everybody” in Burmese. Excuse the strange greeting.  Weird. I think I have been on flickr too much!

Anyway, I am back from hiatus, fully recovered from the five-day-grosses-virus-ever that struck me last Wednesday. Since that time, I have hosted a surprise 60th Birthday Party for my mother at my house, hosted a Sunday Brunch for out of town guests at my house, picked up a flat of strawberries from Excelsior, Georgia, weaned Beatrice , taken Atlscatsmeow’s camera on a trial run, gone on a few bike rides, read the first four pages of The Omnivore Dilemma , cut gardenias  and put them in every room and finished an article for the July edition of Bellas and Beaus Magazine.  Remember, I did all this while I felt like I had been run over by a sixteen wheeler. It has been a TOUGH few days.

Without the love and attention of my dear sister (and the prescription pills she packed in her pocket), I would not have survived the weekend. Who said “Mamas little helpers” where just for babies?  They were for Mama this weekend! I am extremely serious about the last three words of the first sentence…but here I am.

Regretfully, I haven’t had much time to upload pictures or to blog.  Thank you for mosing over to check on me over the past week. Your kindness really lifted my spirits.

Happy Monday Night, you guys. I am baaa-ack!
