Bye for now. I’ll be back in 3 weeks with fun pictures and good stories from our European Adventure. I have much to see and do, to think about, to learn and experience. Thanks everybody! Your phone calls, phone messages, emails, sweet gifts of time make me feel warmed and loved. Thank you for EVERYTHING. We love you!
Note to Aunt Peg: I am right on your ETSY Shop when I get back. It is all me!
I hope you are having a good week. Ours is hectic and busy as we pack a little, play a little, cuddle a little and then pack and play more. We were fruitful again today. The bunk beds are painted, the kitchen cabinets are on their way to organization (yikes), and all the random pots about the yard are planted, watered and fertilized. College Cottage scored a Eucalyptis Tree, a few lantana bushes, a white flowered bush, and a traveling Don Juan buried in the skin of her landscape. There is nothing like having someone live in your house for three weeks to get you motivated to plant the rose bush that has been sitting in a pot for two years. Oh, and I have Easy Cream Cheese Chicken in the Crock Pot to freeze for a meal for our guests. We also confirmed that Barry is staying in Brooklet with Mom & Dad the length of our hiatus. Pet Mama can relax. Whew. I have been worried about ol’ Bear (as Dad calls him). Barry will be so excited. I can’t wait to tell him!
“The cost of Alzheimer’s? Everything you ever owned, everything you ever thought you would get, and things you never even thought about.”
“It’s a long, slow slide into oblivion, with no brakes.”
“If this was a paper journal, the ink would be running with tears.”
“Imagine a really beautiful, perfect statue, left out in the wind and rain for centuries, to be worn away, until it’s only retained the shape of a person, not any of the individuality. That’s what Alzheimer’s did to my father. It wore him away, all the sharp edges and crisp points that made him Bob Rizza, who loved his family and his pets and his raspberry bushes, and turned him into a fearful person with a vague and confused stare.”
“It’s a nasty disease, surrounded by shadows and small, largely unseen tragedies.”–Terry Pratchett
I totally have insomnia. Between the excitement of celebrating Brian’s last day at work (forever-ever) and preparing to leave our house for a few weeks, I am completely exhausted, tuckered and weary. Oddly, I can’t sleep.
My mind races as I ponder ALL the things that need to be done, Denny and Megan’s bundle, Lilly’s new-found ability to say ’B', the bad bug, and fun things in France like castles and Mont’s and wine and massive cemeteries and medieval bridges.
Despite a little deliri, Monday has proved productive. Actually, The entire weekend has been fruitful. Here are the things we have accomplished in preparation for the looming Furlough:
Visited Blondie the cat for a morning pet sit. How does this relate to the trip preparation? Spending money!
Dropped 2 loads of duds to the consignment shop. While in the shop we learned that Beatrice has earned $50.00 commission. She is quite the business woman! As her money manager, I can’t decide if we should take it to France or reserve it for Kindermusik money. Hmm…any thoughts?
Returned 2 items to Belks. While cleaning out my closet, I found a skirt with the tags still attatched from last a Fall purchase. Do you do this, too? Unfortunately without the receipt, I only got FIVE dollars for it. Five dollars is five dollars (that is about 3 euros) more than I had with it hanging in my closet so I handed it over. Who knows if I would have ever worn the skirt.
Bought 5 fluffy bath towels and wash cloths including two super fluffy ones for Madam and Monsieur.
Bought 5 beach towels
Bought a basket ball and plastic ball for the children to play with. I feel guilty as I have no idea what children over 3 play with.
Bought ingredients for one supper to leave behind for dinner
Mix muffin mix as directed on package. Bake 15 minutes. Cool and crumble. Combine pudding mix with cream cheese, add milk a little at a time; beat well. In separate bowl, layer banana nut crumbs, pudding, bananas and whipped topping. Top off with whip topping and sprinkle top with pecans. Chill and serve.
Dad’s lost wallet arrived in the mail last week containing everything except all the cash. Did I stress all? For some reason, “memory loss” makes you carry around senseless amounts of booty. The wallet round & full of bills protrudes from his siloette as Mount Everest standing upon the desert. And no, a caregiver can not even get close to the heavily protected rock of money even to count it. It is protected, prized, and obsessed about. Accept of course, when it is forgotten on a table, in a drawer, in a file cabinet, under a secret closet stash or dropped outside the pocket undetected.
The surprise arrival came after the car and house locks were re-keyed, after the police report was filed.
Who knows if it is a blessing, or not? I mean, nice of them to send it back without the cash ????? Maybe the thief experienced a moment of epiphany which made him put it in the mail. Or, maybe someone found it post the cash-empty and dropped it in the mail. Without a return address, we will never know. Did the person pick it out of his pocket or find it on the ground? So many questions.
All that I know, Dad, is that I love you and that I am sorry that your cash stash is short changed.
At some point when Father Time and I have made amends, I will say something much more elaborate in the way of introducing you to one of my oldest and favorite friends, Holly. Actually, Holly is a friend of my younger sister. Despite the five year age difference, I used to love playing dress-up with them. They were both so cute! We would dress up like punk rockers (or the character of our best imagination) and then use my poloroid for the photography shoot. Memories are the best!
Anyway, she has just rolled out her super cute blog. Life is Good.
Yay, Brooklet Blog Mamas!
In the meantime, you simply must go over and read her about her entreprenueal dreams about opening a custom sewing business. Watch the slideshow. Her work is really good. And, her beautifully-locked daughter is named Elle. How perfect is that? She could be the next-big-sewers-dream model!
An exceptional monument, the distinctive form of Mont-Saint-Michel and its abbey spire rise out of the bay as a beacon for curious and discerning travellers. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the abbey was built in the Middle Ages by a small religious community living on the mount and has since been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. For many years, the natural beauty of the mount has been undermined by the gradual advance of the shore, caused by silt borne into the bay by the River Couesnon. To reverse this process of unintentional land reclamation, a daring feat of engineering is underway to make our “Saint Michael’s Mount” an island once more.
And, I found this video of Mont St. Michael. It is rather long and dull, however you can tap through it and see breath taking photos.
That IS Honey. Your recognition is correct. Mom, Amanda, Can you believe it? Do you remember her? It was Honey and Miss Bean (who I thought was related to Aunt Peggy!!!)
The doll in the picture is one of MY dolls that my mother saved. It came in a car load of boxes from moms attic. Of all the pretty dolls – Cabbage Patch Kids, Adoption Dolls, and loads of cute stuffed animals – Beatrice has an affinity for old Honey who was probably delivered to me in a hand-me-down sack. Mom, feel free to dispute that – I am just assuming.
Does anyone elses kids or pets play with your old toys? Did your mother save them for 33 years?
Anyway, here’s wishing you a lip-smacking-honey-good Monday!
No countdown to France could happen without including The Palace of Versailles. I am so excited about visiting this amazing place!! We watched Marie Antionette (with Kirsten Dunst) one night just to see Hollywood’s take on Versailles. It was beautiful.
You won’t believe it but, Southern Mamas has come to the rescue AGAIN. There is actually a class to help stop toddler tantrums!!!! This is unbelieveable. I wonder if it really works. Have you or anyone you know tried this?
Don’t fret. You will survive toddlerhood and the “no” stage.
Especially now that the Atlanta pediatric nurses behind MomsOnCall.com are offering their popular toddler parenting seminar online. The course aims to help parents find out:
The one thing that your child needs most but will never tell you.
Why kids misbehave and discover how to motivate your child to achieve and make good choices.
Three household rules your toddler can understand.
Things to say to your children that motivate them to want to behave
How to handle discipline, sleep issues, tantrums, going out to eat, potty training, and much more!
Sign up for the on-line toddler seminar here. The seminar also is offered live in Atlanta. Click here for info.
Wow. Is this cute or what? Meg’s work is phenomenal. I am so impressed by this South Georgia freelancer who lives by the sea with a 19 YEAR OLD cat name Henry.
Plundering through her blog will give you a candy-cane-good feeling. The sugar coated illustrations are like snacking, baby! Seriously, the work is special because it has a spicy way of illustrating detailed feelings like discovery, abstinence and more.
Go. Go now. Check it out for yourself.
By the way. I feel like the brunette in this illustration.
“Take ME away blog world. Take ME away. Please right now I insist.”
Oh my goodness less than a month to go! Looking down on Cap Ferrat {above} !! Wow, do I really deserve this???!!! I REALLY have been a good girl this year. I can’t wait!
The tracking number for thiscame today. I am curious and excited about it’s arrival. We decided on black. I chose camel. Brian chose black. We ended up with black.
Is this how you decide things at your house?
Black seems a little retro these days. Plus, it picks up dog hair and lent so it (usually) looks gross. We had a black baby bjorn. The black just gets used looking or something. Anyway, the man wanted black. So, the woman is getting black.
It’s okay. I will be fine and happy with it. And you know what, it will match my shoes!
Maaaaa Maa is B’s new favorite word. The pronunciation rhymes with Baa Baa like a sheep. The a is short. She is trying to say Mackie. Maaa Maa is the new song about our house. B says it over and over and over. Brian and I both commented last night that we felt like we haven’t seen Beatrice in a few days. She is perpetually stuck to Mackie. B is one going on 13!
We took the little Nashville-ite to Hopeulikit on our Bulloch County Fete. We have picked peaches, gone on a riding tour of Georgia Southern, gone on a walk downtown, swimming at a friends pool, and to get pedicures.
I found this recipe stashed in the recipe box from my secret sister. It looks so yummy. With a can of artichoke’s in the pantry it seems the easy answer to tonights what-to-cook-for-supper dilemma.
INGREDIENTS
1 (15 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped or 14 oz jar
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup of real mayonnaise
2 Cloves of Crushed (I used Minced) Garlic
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
Directions:
If time permits marinate the chicken in the artichoke juice for several hours.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
In a medium bowl, mix together the artichoke hearts, Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, and garlic.
Place chicken in a greased baking dish, and cover evenly with artichoke mixture.
Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until chicken is no longer pink in the center and juices run clear, or until brown and bubbly.
We have been signing I LOVE YOU using the three seperate signs since Beatrice was born. She really hasn’t ever signed it back. I am going to try to use the one sign on the left which equates to I LOVE YOU. I am eager to see what she says!
I Love You
I Love You can be signed as three separate signs, or by using one single gesture. I: Index finger points to self. Love: Fists cross over the chest at wrists. You: Index finger points to other person. I Love You: The “Y” hand is held up with the index finger extended.

Attached are pictures of a puppy that was found hanging around a Georgia Southern student apartment parking lot in statesboro georgia. After some searching for its owner, the grad student who found it was told that some students had gotten it from someone selling (or giving away) puppies at Walmart. Later, the students decided they didn’t want it anymore and released it in the parking lot to fend for itself.
It is an intact male, under a year old, very sociable, likes other dogs, needs some work with house training. The rescuer cannot keep the dog, but will hold it for a day or two before taking it to the shelter. If anyone is interested in him or if his story is incorrect and someone is looking for him, please call Duke at (919) 671-2100 or 587-4217.
The Perils of Plastic Is your home a toxic playground? Another culinary culprit may be lurking in your kitchen—plastics. Different plastic household items, like baby bottles, food containers and even eyeglasses, contain chemicals that may have harmful effects on your family’s health.
